A la fin du XVIIIe siècle, James Jackson quitte l'Irlande pour s'établir en Amérique. Il fait la connaissance d'un futur président des Etats-Unis avec lequel il s'associe et fait fortune. James achète une magnifique plantation dans l'Alabama, qu'il fait valoir avec une admirable ténacité et l'aide d'esclaves fidèles et soumis. Mais l'amour fougueux de son fils pour une jeune esclave va boulverser l'ordre établi. De cette union illicite naît Queen, la grand-mère de l'auteur. Aussitôt bannie du domaine, Queen affronte dans le sang et les larmes les derniers soubresauts de l'esclavage.
